Gangsta rap is a sub-genre of Hip-Hop, it is slang for the term gangster rap. Gangster rap came from the hood or inner city areas in which rappers used it to represent their gangs. It was started in the early 1980's, with the words being first used in Schoolly D's song, "Gangster Boogie".

Some accredit the start of the "gangster theme" as early as 1973. "Hustler's Convention" by Lightnin' Rod came out in 1973 and many of the lyrics spoke the themes still seen today, dealing with street life, pimping and the hustling of drugs. Now a days those themes as well as homophobia, violence, racism, black supremacy, profanity, promiscuity, misogyny, rape, street gangs, drive-by shootings, vandalism, thievery, drug dealing, alcohol abuse, substance abuse and materialism are all seen in hip-hop music.
